I do not know how other people would set about the task. I can
therefore only tell you how I myself have approached the matter, and I
must submit to the reproach that my way of solving the problem is the
outcome of my individual prejudice. Indeed, this objection is so
entirely true, that I should not know how to meet it. I might,
perhaps, content myself by referring to Columbus, who, by using
subjective assumptions, a false hypothesis, and a route abandoned by
modern navigation, nevertheless discovered America.
