In the 17th century, Kikaku, one of the ten disciples of the great
Japanese poet Basho, composed a haiku:
Take a pair of wings
From a dragonfly, you would
Make a pepper-pod.
Basho told Kikaku: That's not a haiku. You kill the dragonfly.
Kikaku recomposed the lines:
Add a pair of wings
To a pepper-pod, you would
Make a dragonfly.
