So much had been written about the Long Island Rail Road (Fred Allen called
it "two strips of rust and a right-of-way") that I decided to take a ride
on it a while back. What an experience!

It is not an exaggeration to say that it almost shook my teeth out. Then
the jolts slackened a little, and I said to a passenger across the aisle,
"It's a little smoother now, isn't it?"

"Yes," the regular rider said. "We're not on the tracks now."
