inc: /ink/ v. Verbal (and only rarely written) shorthand for increment, i.
e. `increase by one'. Especially used by assembly programmers, as many assembly languages have an `inc' mnemonic....
dec: /dek/ v. Verbal (and only rarely written) shorthand for decrement, i.
e. `decrease by one'. Especially used by assembly programmers, as many assembly languages have a `dec' mnemonic....
Inflation rates testify to the worldwide popularity of wishful thinking.
winner: 1. n. An unexpectedly good situation, program, programmer, or person.
2. `real winner': Often sarcastic, but also used as high praise (see also the note under {user})....

memory leak: n. An error in a program's dynamic-store allocation logic that causes it to fail to reclaim discarded memory, leading to eventual collapse due to memory exhaustion.
Also (esp. at CMU) called {core leak}. These problems were severe on older machines with small, fixed-size address spaces, and special "leak detection" tools were commonly written to root them out....
eighty-column mind: [IBM] n. The sort said to be possessed by persons for whom the transition from {punched card} to tape was traumatic (nobody has dared tell them about disks yet).
It is said that these people, including (according to an old joke) the founder of IBM, will be buried `face down, 9-edge first' (the 9-edge being the bottom of the card)....
